About Abruptum
Abruptum was formed in 1989 by IT and All. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. The same year they recorded their first two demos. After the release of the first demo they kicked out their bass player Ext. After the release of a 7`` EP called simply called ``Evil`` in 1991 (later re-released by Psychoslaughter) All began to drink heavily and was forced to leave the band. IT then found a new member in Evil from the young band Marduk. The band became kind of famous very much thanks to the fact that IT was one of the leaders within what was called the Satanic Black Circle. As IT left the scene completely after several events within the circle and threats to him and his family, Morgan continued the band on his own, and decided to put an end to Abruptum in 2005.

unsurpassed evil

Have you ever felt the compulsive need to slice your wrists or those of all the people around you? Have you ever truly gazed into the Abyss? Have you seen the crimson demon wings demanding utter obedience and urging your pathetic waste of flesh to commit unspeakable atrocities? This album gives me just that. From the very first second you get plunged into the darkest depths of Satan's Hellish empire. Darker than black and infinitly more bloody than all the gore bands combined, this is extremely wicked and unpleasant. The chaos and pain that It and Evil have put to tape is so vile that mere human words fail to describe the sheer evil that drips from my stereoset. All things unpleasant and distasteful suddenly become very rewarding. In this trip of blasphemy and intolerance all that is human gets stripped from your soul until there is a bleeding corpse left. Upon closer viewing you realize that the corpse is you. This album is pain, suicide, rape, torture, violence, intolerance, war, all things evil into one burst of negative emotions. There is no way anyone can review this album with a musical point of view. How can you give a musically based judgement on something that is not, nor tries to be, music? The rating above is simply a matter of taste. Very effective to be played at maximum volume in a completely lightless surrounding. It will truly kill your sanity.
Pain, pure and simple...

From the genius behind Opthalamia and to a lesser extent War, It, comes an album so completely out of sync with anything ever before released under a black metal nominator, that indeed it is a hard thing to review.
Why? Because this isn't music anymore, this is audio Hell. This pure damnation drizzling through your speakers.
Where most music seems a way for either the musician or the listener to deal with pain and inner turmoil, Abruptum loose themselves completely in the horror and pain they (say they) endure. Abruptum is an amplifier for pain and suffering. This is actually what it would sound like when Neurosis or even Esoteric would get REALLY depressed.
I'm not even sure the term metal aplies anymore, this is Noise with the atmosphere of some of the more grim and somber Black Metal Albums (try Burzum times ten).
It is in any case an interesting album and deserves the Cult status is has achieved over the years.
Not for the weak hearted.

Bandgeschichte
1989–1996
Die Band wurde 1989 von Tony „IT“ Särkkä sowie Jim „All“ Berger, die auch bei Vondur und War zusammen arbeiteten, gegründet und im Jahr 1990 durch Ext ergänzt. In dieser Besetzung nahm man noch im selben Jahr das erste Demoband „Hextum Galaem Zelog“ auf. Nach dessen Fertigstellung wurde Ext wegen persönlicher Differenzen aus der Band geworfen und kurz darauf – noch immer 1990 – das zweite Demo „The Satanist Tunes“ fertiggestellt.
Im Jahre 1991 folge die EP „Evil“ (später unter dem Titel „Psychoslaughter“ wiederveröffentlicht). Einige Zeit darauf musste All die Band wegen massiver Alkoholprobleme verlassen und wurde durch Morgan „Evil“ Steinmeyer Håkansson von der damals noch jungen schwedischen Black-Metal-Band Marduk ersetzt. In dieser Besetzung folgten 1993 das Album „Obscuritatem advoco amplectere me“ sowie 1994 das Album „In umbra malitiae ambulabo, in aeternum in triumpho tenebraum“, beide auf Deathlike Silence Productions. Ohne Beteiligung Evils folgte 1996 das Album „Vi sonus veris nigrae malitiaes“, nach dessen Fertigstellung IT der Black-Metal-Szene vollständig den Rücken kehrte und Abruptum damit faktisch begrub.
seit 2000
Im Jahre 2000 jedoch beschloss Evil, Abruptum alleine weiterzuführen und veröffentlichte noch im selben Jahr die EP „De profundis mors vas cousumet“, welche teils aus alten (1991) und bis dahin unveröffentlichten, teils bereits aus neu komponierten Stücken bestand, wobei Evil mit letzteren, ganz wie mit dem 2004 folgenden Album „Casus luciferi“, stilistisch weitgehend neue Wege einschlug.
Nachdem Evil im Jahre 2005 zunächst die Auflösung Abruptums bekannt gab, kündigte er einige Zeit darauf das Erscheinen eines weiteren Albums für den Herbst 2005 an, welches den Titel „Maleficent“ tragen sollte. Mittlerweile wurde der Erscheinungstermin auf den 20. Februar 2006 verschoben.
Insbesondere, weil Abruptum stets als vor allem ITs geistiges Kind galt, merken Kritiker an, dass das Weiterführen Abruptums seitens Evil vor allem finanziellen Erwägungen geschuldet sein dürfte. So begegnen Fans der Abruptum-Ära bis 1996 den späteren Veröffentlichungen zumeist mit Ablehnung.
Stil
Die Kategorisierung der Band als Black Metal ist jedoch umstritten, da die Kompositionen Abruptums stilistisch kaum in Bezug zum (Black) Metal oder überhaupt zu Musik im Sinne klanglicher Harmonie stehen. Den Aussagen ITs (Gründer und damaliger „kreativer Kopf“ der Band) zufolge – welcher Abruptum mitunter als „The Audial Essence of Pure Black Evil“ (zu Deutsch etwa: „Die akustische Essenz des reinen, schwarzen Bösen“) bezeichnete – ist dies jedoch durchaus beabsichtigt.
Durchzogen von als äußerst störend empfundenen Klangreizen, metallisch-bizarren Geräuschkulissen und übersteuertem, unmenschlich anmutenden Schreien, erzeugen die Werke Abruptums eine äußerst dunkle Stimmung, die man dem Noise zuordnen kann.
